The Place Between Tides_Catriona Pollard

Mangroves exist at the threshold — where land meets water, stillness meets motion. These tidal ecosystems are sanctuaries of complexity, quietly filtering water, sheltering marine life, and anchoring the shifting shore. Increasingly, the way many people encounter mangroves is from a raised walkway — suspended above their tangled beauty, close enough to see, yet often too far to truly feel their intricate role in the ecosystem.

This sculpture draws from that distance and intimacy. Using complex, repetitive weaving techniques, I mirror the root systems that hold land and life together. Each thread explores connection — between nature and humanity, presence and perception. The interplay of shadows cast by the sculpture moves beyond its form, creating space for reflection on what we notice, and what we overlook.

Walkways offer us access, but also remind us how removed we have become. We observe without touching, pass through without understanding. This work is both homage and provocation: urging us to step closer, to honour mangroves not just as scenery, but as sovereign life forms essential to planetary balance.

Mangroves are more than plants — they are networks of life, living testaments to the power of symbiosis. To protect mangroves is to protect the fragile harmony of the Earth — and our place within it.

This is woven sculpture with stunning recycled copper detail. Best hung vertically. Composed using foraged Five Leaf Water vine which is an invasive weed. The intricate and complex weaving of copper wire references the ancient basketry technique of looping. The pigment is handmade using charcoal dust.
